Susan Sarandon & Eva Amurri-Martino in Cambodia for Anti-Trafficking Day

There’s a great article from the Condé Nast Traveler about Eva Amurri-Martino and her mother Susan Sarandon’s trip to Cambodia.

It is early morning on Cambodian Anti-Human Trafficking Day in Phnom Penh, and there is not a stylist or hair and makeup person in sight. I have been traveling with Susan Sarandon and her actress daughter Eva Amurri-Martino for a week now, bouncing through the Cambodian countryside through dusty poor villages to visit shelters for former sex slaves, and Susan has been on her own when it comes to hair and makeup—with no complaints whatsoever. To her credit, Susan, an Academy Award winner whose theatrical career isn’t particularly known in Cambodia, just doesn’t take herself that seriously. This morning, Susan and Eva have gamely donned traditional Cambodian skirts and green Somaly Mam Foundation golf shirts, and we are heading for a rally to fight sex trafficking. Somaly, a former prostitute whose organization rescues sex slaves (and I mean that literally: the girls in her shelters—the youngest of whom, hard to believe, is three—had been sold to brothels for anywhere from $10 to $50, and often were locked in cages), has asked Susan and her daughter to attend. “This really sends a strong message to the powerful people in this country that people in the United States care about sex trafficking,” says Somaly.

After a series of long speeches by government officials before an audience of hundreds of school children, NGO workers, and survivors of sex slavery, Susan takes the podium and speaks—as usual—from the heart. “Our hearts and minds have been opened by the beautiful and brave girls who have been rescued,” she says. “How can you learn to give love when you yourself have seen only violence? Somaly Mam has taught me the power of love, and the way it heals and motivates people. It’s the only way.” Typically, Susan has a political agenda, too: by lending her support to Somaly’s cause, she is helping to hold the political leaders seated on the dais accountable—in a country where corruption is a way of life. “We can all help by recognizing this problem,” Susan adds, “and by enforcing the laws.”

I am thinking that surely there aren’t many Hollywood superstars who would be willing to rough it like this—12-hour days, no hair and makeup, no catered food. For a week now, Susan and Eva have been bearing witness to the stories of Somaly’s girls, all former sex slaves. Just yesterday, at the Tom Dy Center outside Phnom Penh, Susan hugged a 14-year-old girl, a slip of a thing who has just recently been saved in a brothel raid. I was struck by how real Sarandon is, how she has listened and hugged and affirmed the girls’ dignity at every stop. At the same time, she is aware of the power that her celebrity carries, and she tries to use it intelligently. “The only reason to bring a celebrity to visit a project like this is to help validate these people’s stories,” she says. “Now that I have been here and seen in person what they are doing, I will be much better equipped to tell their stories when I go back home.”

Please stay tuned: In the coming months, Condé Nast Traveler will be writing about Susan’s week-long trip through Cambodia—and the beautiful, former war-torn country’s efforts to rebuild its society.

Susan Sarandon: Eva Amurri’s Wedding Was ‘Moving’

After divorcing her husband in 1978, Oscar winning actress Susan Sarandon once famously stated: “I no longer believe in marriage.”

But it seems that her daughter, Eva Amurri, might be changing her mother’s mind. Just last month, the 26-year-old Californication star married former MLS soccer player Kyle Martino in Charleston, South Carolina.

“I was very moved by the strength of Eva’s commitment and her certainty,” Sarandon told British magazine HELLO! in the upcoming Nov. 21 issue. “The lead-up to this moment was effortless because it was so obviously right.”

Although Sarandon chose not to tie the knot with Tim Robbins (her former partner of 21 years), she was still supportive of her daughter’s decision to marry. “It was a beautiful occasion, most importantly because we were all together to witness what they had found together,” Sarandon told HELLO! “She was the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen, full of love, generosity and strength.”

And it seems that Eva Amurri might have gotten some of those traits from her upbringing. According to the magazine, the bride said that Sarandon and Robbin’s speeches were “lovely.”

“I wasn’t surprised they gave wonderful speeches because they’ve very eloquent, caring, great people,” Amurri told HELLO!

As for marriage advice, Sarandon offered up some wise words, reportedly telling the newlyweds “to live their lives as the ongoing creation of a beautiful, unique work of art.”
